Apple Airs New iPad TV Commercials ‘Alive’ & ‘Together’

Apple released two new 30 second iPad commercials during primetime last night. The two commercials focus 300,000 plus apps available for the iPad and feature the tagline “With over 300,000 apps, iPad is up for anything you are.”

Both commercials begin with words rapidly appearing on screen and suddenly stopping on a selected word with a chorus of people shouting out the word. The commercials then showcase a number of apps being used before new words begin to cycle across the screen and the process begins again.

Some of the popular iPad apps featured in the two commercials include: Amplitube, Style.com, Garageband,TED,iMovie, iBookstore, Toca Hair Salon, Vimeo, iBooks, iPhoto, FaceTime, Glow Hockey 2 HD, Dinosaur Zoo, Endless Alphabet, Solar Walk -3D Solar System, Ultimate Sharks, Rockmate and Heart Pro III

Both TV commercials showcase apps being used on Apple’s new iPad mini and the larger 4th generation iPad.

These new iPad commercial are faster paced then previous iPad TV ads and are in some ways reminiscent of Apple’s earlier high-energy iPod and iPhone commercials.

Apple Airs New ‘All on iPad’ TV Commercial During Olympics

Apple aired a new iPad commercial during tonight’s Olympic TV coverage.  The new ad is a departure from the company’s recent series of Mac “Genius” inspired ads that ran during the first week of the Olympics.

Apple instead returned with its ‘Do it all’ theme for the new iPad commercial. The latest TV ad begins with the narrator rataling off all the cool things you can do with you iPad, “Read it, tweet it …”   Apple once again stresses the iPad’s superior display, stating that “you can do just about anything on iPad. And with Retina display, it’s all more beautiful than ever.”

Some of the apps featured in this new iPad ad include (in order of appearance):  iBooks, Safari, FaceTime, Keynote, Square Register, Movies, Music (playing Mastered for iTunes albums) and iPhoto.

John Malkovich and Siri Contemplate the Meaning of Life

Apple added two new iPhone TV commercials to its collection of ads featuring popular actors using Siri.  The latest commercials feature Oscar nominated actor John Malkovich casually chatting with Siri on his iPhone and follow in the footsteps of previous Apple commercials featuring actors Samuel L Jackson and Zooey Deschanel.  True to form, Malkovich ponders the deeper meaning of life with Siri in one commercial and explores Siri’s lighter side in the next ad asking Siri to tell him a joke.

Siri has been a standout feature of Apple’s latest generation iPhone but has been curiously absent from the new iPad.  While some adventurous hackers have gotten Siri running on the iPad, most customers will have to wait until Apple finally decides to port the feisty personal assistant to the iPad. Be sure to checkout the second video after the break.

Earlier this year Apple CEO Tim Cook indicated over 100 million users had signed up for the company’s iCloud service. “It is incredible that this has happened in just a few months period of time. We’re thrilled with it, and the response from customers has been incredible.”

Amazon Takes Another Swipe at iPad in New Kindle Commercial

Amazon is stepping up its fight against Apple’s iPad with its latest round of Kindle TV commercials.  Earlier today, Amazon aired a new TV commercial taking direct aim at the iPad and showed the problems of reading an iPad in direct sunlight. The commercial goes on to portray the Kindle superior to the iPad in several key areas.

The commercial features a lady fumbling with her iPad as she tries to read her screen but is unable to see it due to the extreme glare.  Most multitouch glass displays have problems in bright sunlight and Apple’s iPad is no exception. The Kindle, unlike the iPad, uses an e-ink display which looks more like a traditional newspaper or magazine and is easy to read in direct sunlight.

The commercial’s key Kindle highlights:

  • Has over 800,000 books – Amazon has more books than what’s available in Apple’s iBookstore
  • No Glare – The iPad’s glass screen is prone to glare in harsh lighting conditions
  • Easy to read in bright sunlight
  • lighter than a paperback – the iPad weighs 1.5 pounds versus 0.54 for the Kindle 3
  • Battery life of up to a month  - while the Kindle can last a month, you need to turn off all wireless functions otherwise battery life is about a week.  The iPad has a rated battery life of 10 hours under normal use.

The Kindle’s e-ink display, while limited to basic pictures and text, has long been a key selling point and it looks like Amazon wants to make sure everyone knows that the iPad is not necessarily better than the new $139 Kindle for certain tasks.  If you want to do anything other than read books,  the iPad is a much better choice.  It will also be interesting to see if Apple will improve the upcoming iPad 2′s screen quality to better compete against the Kindle in bright lighting conditions.

Motorola Airs Full Xoom Commercial During Super Bowl

Taking a page from Apple’s advertising playbook from 1984, Motorola used the opportunity during tonight’s Super Bowl to air the full commercial for their new iPad competitor, the Xoom. Motorola gave a sneak peak of the commercial earlier in the week and tonight aired the full 60 second spot.

The Xoom commercial is reminiscent of Apple’s vintage ’1984′ ad and shows mindless crowds walking around with Apple’s classic white earbuds dangling from their ears.  While the masses go about their business, the ad’s protagonist reads George Orwell’s ’1984′ on his new Xoom tablet and creates a schlocky video to impress the cute girl.  The girl, impressed with Mr.”Xoom’s” handy work, symbolically unplugs her white earbuds and moves away from all things Apple.

Motorola’s ad is clearly a jab at Apple and all the fans that ‘mindlessly’ buy and use their products. The commercial’s bleak Orewellian theme has received some criticism for its lack of originality and the company made some revisions to the full length version perhaps in a nod to those complaints.  While Motorola touts the Xoom as “the tablet to create a better world,” it still has to prove their tablet can successfully compete against the current iPad and upcoming iPad 2.

The Xoom will be the first tablet to use Google’s latest Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and according to Engadget, is expected to go on sale February 24 for $799.99 at Verizon and Best Buy Stores.
