Wall Street Journal goes hands-on with TiVo Stream

Earlier this week, TiVo confirmed it will start selling its TiVo Stream transcoder box in early September. Announced at CES 2012, the TiVo Stream connects to a TiVo Premiere set-top box and streams both recorded and live TV to your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The Wall Street Journal got a review unit and ran the TiVo Stream through its paces. You can get a quick rundown of the device and a brief look at the iPad app by watching the WSJ's video review.

TiVo Stream iOS transcoder box due September 6th

Earlier this year, TiVo unveiled the TiVo Stream, a streaming media device that sends TiVo content to your iPad and iPhone. TiVo had a prototype of the device at CES 2012 and later confirmed the Stream would land this summer. Now that the summer is over, the company is ready to kick off sales of the device in early September, says a report in AllThingsD.

The TiVo Stream is an external device that connects to your TiVo Premiere or Premiere Q DVR and streams content to a mobile device, which currently is the iPhone and iPad. Customers can watch recorded content and even download shows to their iOS device for offline viewing. TiVo Stream also serves up the channel guide and lets customers watch their favorite TV show live.

According to AllThingsD, the TiVo Stream will be available starting September 6 for $130. The device will initially go on sale at Tivo.com and then land at Best Buy in the following weeks. It requires a TiVo Premiere set-top box and a TiVo subscription.

TiVo planning iOS streaming for this summer

Here's some good news for TiVo users: The DVR company is planning to follow the lead of other broadcasting services, and provide for streaming of recorded TiVo content to iOS devices later this summer. To do so, you'll need to have a TiVo Premiere, which is the company's web-connected DVR streaming device, as well as an external box called the TiVo Stream, which will take recorded content on the DVR, and set it up to stream through the Internet to your mobile device.

And by "mobile device," we mean the iPhone or the iPad -- TiVo has only mentioned the capability for Apple devices so far, so Android users are out of luck for now. There are already plenty of ways to watch TV or movies on your iPhone (from Netflix and Hulu to full cable services and even add-on accessories), but if you already have a TiVo grabbing content for you, a device like this should make it easy to watch that content anywhere.

TiVo Announces New Streaming Boxes for Tablets and Smartphones

TiVoRounding out TiVo’s announcement that their Q4 earnings exceeded analyst expectations (due in large part to the net addition of 234K subscribers after their Virgin Media UK roll out), the company also announced the release of a new device that will allow a TiVo to stream content to iOS (as well as Android) tablets and smartphones.

Described as a “four-stream transcoder”, this small box (not a dongle as some had wanted and speculated) will have the ability to transmit up to 4 streams at once and was demo’d with great success at CES 2012.

The exciting bit of news is that the new boxes will be able to handle live TV as well as recorded programs and will extend its usefulness by allowing you to side-load (download) media for watching later. This last feature alone is enough to make me want one, as streaming Netflix or other services can be patchy in some areas (like on my treadmill in the lower level of my house where WiFi signals seem to be a little too weak for the bandwidth required).

No pricing details for this new streaming box have been released, though we can expect to see it by the end of the summer this year.

In addition to this news, TiVo announced a host of other set-top boxes and hardware that demonstrates a commitment to remaining a strong contender in the marketplace. With subscriber numbers as good as they have had in over 6 years, it would appear that TiVo is on an upswing.

The timing of this launch is important with suspicions continuing to rise regarding the television solution Apple has planned. If Apple manages to take the television world by storm the way they have in the smartphone and tablet markets it is wise for the other big contenders to start bringing their A-game and delivering products to consumers that give them the mobile, on-demand connectivity they desire.

The now universal application also includes a handful of bug and speed fixes that appear on the iPhone and iPad version. Both apps are in the App Store now and available for free.

TiVo announces plans for updated iPad app

Do you own a TiVo Premiere or Premiere XL box? And do you use the free Tivo iPad companion app as a remote control for that box? If so, you'll be happy to hear that TiVo has announced plans for an updated version of the app.

While the update isn't available on the App Store at this time, it adds new features for cable partners who provide customers with branded TiVo boxes. The app will add the cable operator's Video on Demand service into search and browse, so TiVo users can easily pull up VoD content for viewing.

The announcement, made today at the 2011 NCTA Cable Show in Chicago, did not provide details on when the new app version would be available.

New Version of TiVo's Companion Application Adds Operator's VOD Catalog and Integrates VOD Prominently Into the Overall Search Results

CHICAGO, IL, Jun 13, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in advanced television services including digital video recorders (DVRs), today announced that it has enhanced its TiVo App for iPad to include new features tailored to its cable partners. Launched on the App store earlier this year, the TiVo App for iPad enables users to search, browse, explore and share their favorite entertainment all without interrupting what's playing on the television. Once found, the user simply "flicks" the selected content from the iPad to their TV screen.

The new version of TiVo's companion iPad application automatically adds the operator's Video on Demand into the search and browse features within the App, allowing viewers to quickly find a TV program or movie and enjoy it on TV. The App also automatically detects and integrates the operator's branding, linear programming and VOD catalog when connected to a TiVo box provided by the operator.

"Operators are constantly looking for new ways to connect with their subscribers," said David Sandford, TiVo's Vice President and General Manager of TiVo's service provider business. "The enhancements we have made to our iPad App help cable operators bring TiVo's innovative user interface directly into the hands of their subscribers, thereby offering consumers the ultimate remote control and viewing on demand experience. We have only just begun to refine our offering to the operator community and look forward to bringing additional elements to the TiVo iPad App."

Updated TiVo iPad App Aims to Please Cable Companies

TiVo for iPad works with TiVo’s newest model DVRs, the TiVo Premiere and TiVo Premiere XL boxes. The app turns the user’s iPad into a specialized remote control that can search, browse, discover and share television content without interrupting the show that is playing on TV. After you find the program through the app, simply “flick” the selected content from the iPad to the TV.

TiVo tailored additional options in the update to integrate more fully with a user’s cable operator. The app will now add Video On Demand (VOD) content from a user’s cable company into its search and browse features automatically.

The two cable operators who recently began renting TiVo boxes to subscribers, Suddenlink and RCN, will likely benefit the most from the update. If a user has rented a TiVo box from their cable operator, the TiVo app will now be able to detect and integrate the operator’s programming and VOD catalog automatically.

Aside from the integration of VOD, the TiVo app allows users to schedule programs, to record from a remote location, to access a database of information on a show’s cast and crew, as well as to offering a disk space meter — which is something any TiVo user can appreciate.

Even though TiVo and cable companies are often directly competing for consumer’s DVR dollars, they now both face competition from other services, such as Netflix and Hulu, or upstarts such as Bamboom that want us the watch television through their service.

The cable operators are just the most recent in a long line of partnerships that TiVo has formed. TiVo users who subscribe to Hulu Plus may now access that service’s content through TiVo. Hulu joins a long list of other companies including YouTube, NetFlix, and Amazon whose content is available through the TiVo box. The San Francisco Business Times reports that TiVo and Comcast plan to partner to show its on-demand programming through set-top boxes, with San Francisco as its first test market.

Over time TiVo has demonstrated a willingness to partner with video content providers of all stripes in an effort to build its brand, something that certainly benefits the TiVo customer. TiVo also subtly nudges its consumers to upgrade by only making its iPad app compatible with its newest DVR models. Only time will judge how the TiVo brand and its penchant for partnerships can withstand the inevitable changes that are coming to the way folks watch TV.

i.TV extends to the iPad, adds Hulu integration

itvtop.jpg

The free i.TV app for iPhone has been providing program guide and show information for TV addicts since October of 2008, and it's been improving steadily since then. With version 3, now available on the App Store, the app has gone universal and provides a full-screen iPad experience for browsing schedules, shows and TV-related news.

The main i.TV interface has been overhauled (clearing up some of the issues we noted previously), and now defaults to Shows mode; you can select from top programs, search and sift through a comprehensive list, or assign favorites for quick access. Tapping on a show gives you a rundown of the most recent episodes, details about upcoming airings, links to news and IMDb/Wikipedia entries on the show -- in other words, more info than you could possibly need. You can also set your TiVo DVR to record the show right from your iPhone or iPad. All the same features are available from the program grid if you want to see what's on now or at a future time.

There's more action in the 'Where to Watch' section; if you want to buy episodes from iTunes, watch them on TV or add DVDs to your Netflix queue, all are a tap away. Version 3 adds Hulu to the watching options, so if you're a Hulu Plus subscriber you can launch the Hulu iPad app directly from i.TV and start watching many shows in moments.

In the v3 rebuild, some features of previous versions have dropped out. The app's Facebook and Twitter integration is being redesigned; although you can use your Facebook credentials to authenticate, you can't share show info on the social networks at the moment. The ability in earlier versions to control a Roku remote is also gone in v3, and that apparently will not be coming back.

If you're looking for an attractive and capable iPhone or iPad program guide, give i.TV a spin; if you're a TiVo owner, you definitely want to have it on your device.

TiVo asks customers about live iPad streaming

tivo testing ipad streamingAs Engadget notes, TiVo has launched a survey asking current customers if they'd like to be able to "stream live TV, DVR recordings and TV shows from a cable company's On Demand library to one's iPad." The survey asks users how they would feel about about both streaming video from their TiVo while in their home with the TiVo unit, and also about how they would feel about streaming shows recorded on TiVo to their iPad over a broadband connection when they are out of their homes.

TiVo launched an iPad app in January of this year that allows users to browse program guides, schedule recordings and remotely control their TiVo. However, that app does not currently allow streaming. Engadget theorizes that iPad streaming could be TiVo's attempt to lure customers back to the device. TiVo stock has fallen more than 50 percent since last May as many people turn to their cable service providers for their DVR needs.

TiVo iPad App Announces Limited Support for Series 3 Hardware

Application updates is a normal process for all of us using the new breed of gadgets. But, once in a while, developers will try to sneak-in quiet updates or news on new versions of their software.

The folks at ZatzNotFunny have reported about a new pop-up message that is showing in the latest TiVo app for iPad. The message reveals the company’s plans to extend the iPad application to Series 3 DVRs.

As shown on the image below, the reported pop-up message indicates that full support is coming for Premiere boxes provided by cable providers Suddenlink and RCN. In addition, the message shows that “limited support for TiVo Series3/TiVo HD DVRs” will come soon.

The “coming soon” part is debatable in TiVo world. Yes, when the company launched the iPad app they were clear it would only support new TiVo Premiere hardware. But, the company has received large criticism by its fans because of the lack of iPad app support for some of its “legacy” DVRs.

The company has not provided any details as to what limitations they’re referring to for TiVo Series3/TiVo HD DVRs. The pop-up message only mentions “limited support”.

TiVo will continue to face strong competition from companies like Comcast, Verizon and others. Many of these service/content providers are aiming to turn your iPad into a second-screen remote control where you can manage your DVRs, stream VOD content, and eventually watch live TV on your tablet. Can TiVo keep up with the competition? Stay tuned.

TiVo app available on App Store

Roughly two months after announcing that a TiVo app was in development, TiVo Premiere for iPad was released on Tuesday. Users can browse program guides, schedule recordings, remotely control their TiVo and more. It joins a slew of other apps compatible with TV services such as DISH and DIRECTV.

Engadget got its hands on the app and did a pretty throughout roundup of it. It's an excellent companion beyond a traditional iPad remote, and if you're on the fence about wanting TiVo service, might be the deciding factor in choosing to sign up.

TiVo Launches Premiere App for the iPad

Time shifters can now finally control their TiVo DVR from their iPad.  The DVR pioneer announced earlier in the month that they would be launching an iPad TiVo Premiere app by the end of the month and true to their word, the app is now available in the App Store.

The iPad app turns your iPad into a second-screen remote control where you can manage your TiVo box.  Users can browse, search, schedule and manage their TV content directly from the iPad’s screen without interrupting a show running on the big screen.

The TiVo Premiere app also allows users to find out more about their favorite TV shows.  Pull up complete information on the cast and crew of popular TV shows or even view your favorite actor’s resume online. The integrated search function provides aggregated search results across multiple sources such as Amazon VOD and Netflix.

To use the app, users need a TiVo Premiere or TiVo Premiere XL box and TiVo’s subscription service. The app also requires that both your iPad and the TiVo set-top box use the same local network. TiVo Premiere iPad app is available for free from the Apple App Store.

TiVo iPad App Available by End of January

Two months ago, we wrote about the upcoming Tivo iPad app and its great looks. The app features an elegant and attractive design that will give you full control over your Tivo set-top box. According to a recent “tweet” by Tivo, the company is ready to release the iPad app before the end of this month.

The tweet post reads: “We’ve had many ?’s about timing of the iPad app. Plan is availability by the end of month. Can’t wait to get it to you! :) ”.

The Tivo iPad app allows you to find new content, view guides, schedule and manage recordings, manage season pass recordings and to-do-list, get recommendations, or investigate a particular actor’s entire resume. The application user interface seems to be very intuitive and with complete gesture-based iPad interaction. Following the social TV trends, the application also allows you to post comments about a specific show or movie on your Twitter or Facebook page.

The Tivo iPad application requires that both your iPad and the TiVo set-top box use the same local network. It works with TiVo Premiere and Premiere XL boxes. All Premiere DVRs will need an update to get full support by the new application.

TiVo says iPad app due by end of January

In what could only loosely be called a formal announcement, The Mac Observer is reporting that TiVo took to the Twitter airwaves today to let us know that the TiVo-branded iPad app should be out before the end of January 2011. Back in November 2010 was the first time we had heard about an upcoming TiVo app, and a video posted on its Facebook page finally gives us a glimpse into its capabilities. Users can browse their program guide, schedule recordings, remotely control the TiVo box and check out cast and crew information for any show -- all without interrupting whatever is on the TV itself. The app even offers the ability to schedule recordings on your TiVo when you are away from home.

With DISH releasing its iPad app just last month and DIRECTV offering its own app compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, it's no surprise that TiVo is out with its own version. I prefer the TiVo DVR over the ones offered by cable or satellite companies, so once the app is released we'll be sure to get our hands on it and give it a solid run-through.

Apple patent frenzy: TV set-top box, Cinema Display, iChat, liquid metal

According to Patently Apple, this week Apple's been granted a storm of patents. The patents include:

1. An advanced set-top box that sounds like the superhero offspring of the current Apple TV and a TiVo set. What's new and exciting in this patent is a multiple search engine implementation that would allow programming data to come from multiple providers. The patent also describes a system of searching for "advanced metadata" for shows, which, if found, could include the types of special features that DVD aficionados have grown used to over the past decade. Being able to download, for instance, a director's commentary track for the movie you're watching on HBO would be pretty sweet.

2. A design patent for the Cinema Display. Other than the overall design of the display, there doesn't appear to be much else to this patent; this seems mostly aimed at ensuring that other companies don't copy Apple's design shamelessly.

3. An iChat patent related to audio processing in multi-participant video conferences. This covers the stereo effects seen in multi-participant video chat sessions, ensuring that audio signals are mixed according to the position of the participant's onscreen image.

4. Another iChat patent, this time covering the multi-participant video chat user interface itself. This patent appears to be very specific to iChat's UI rather than a generalized patent, so Skype likely has little to fear from this patent.

5. The final patent is the one I find most interesting, and the one which could have the most far-reaching implications. Apple and Liquidmetal Technologies entered into a Master Transaction Agreement in August of last year, and this patent relates to building a collector plate from a "solidifying amorphous alloy" -- i.e., liquid metal. Patently Apple notes this invention is related to fuel cells, which could mean Apple is looking at developing its own in-house method of deploying next-gen, miniaturized fuel cell technology in its portable products. Even if Apple is developing this technology, it'll likely be years before it deploys in shipping products... but once it does, MacBooks, iPhones, iPods and iPads will run for pretty much forever compared to the running time they get on current lithium ion batteries.

The usual caveats apply: any patents granted for products Apple hasn't shipped yet may never actually find their way to the market (or your living room). In this case, though, let's all hope they do.
