Pixelocity’s Disc Drivin’ has been a popular asynchronous multi-player racing game for the iPhone and iPod touch for a while. It’s an addictive game that will have you taking turns with your friends to flick a small disc around a track to determine who crosses the finish line first. The game will make you sweat and force you to use awesome powers and avoid hazards on beautiful tracks with full 3D physics.
The game is now available with optimized graphics for the iPad.
In case you’re not familiar with the game, Pixelocity Software has designed a game that is an asynchronous multi-player racing game, where you and up to 7 friends or 3 online players will take turns racing around a challenging track. The challenging and fun part of this game is that you race your friends at your own pace by swiping your disc around the track, and using your power-ups while attempting to stay on the track.

You get to activate powers during your turn like turbo boost, bombs, and oil slicks. The game will also throw at you unique obstacles in each track such as bumpers, barriers, and ramps.
The iPad game and overall content is similar to the iPhone/iPod touch version. The developer has upgraded the artwork to fit the iPad’s larger screen. I like the fact that you can toggle the overhead view off and on, which gives you a better perspective of the overall track. In addition, there are pop-up windows that allow you to access your current races list.

Pixelocity has implemented full 3D physics effects, in-game chat, Retina display graphics and push notifications that tell you when it’s your turn to race the track. You also have the ability to play up to 20 games online simultaneously.
The push notifications system is very nice. You can play the game across iOS devices without worrying about missing any notifications. The game will send push notifications to any device you’re logged in from. All games are hosted on the server-side, which means you can log-in from a different iOS device and the game will reload your race list as soon as you open the app.
One thing to keep in mind, is that Disc Drivin’ is not an universal app. That means you need to decide which game you want to buy, the new iPad version or the iPhone/iPod touch version. However, you can always try the lite (free) iPhone version to experience the game before making your buying decision. I wish they had a lite (free) version for the iPad also.
What I liked: Disc Drivin’ HD is an extremely fun game for your iPad. Plays excellent on the larger screen. The push notifications mechanism is great. It’s a fun and challenging game.
What I didn’t like: I would like to see more race courses added in future updates. It’s a fun multi-player game, but the current version does not support a single-player offline mode. Would be nice to get a single-player option so that you don’t always have to compete against random opponents online.
To buy or not to buy: Disc Drivin’ HD is a very fun game for the iPad. It’s addictive, challenging and a good game to relax while playing against your friends online. If you’re not sure about this game, simply download the free ad-supported iPhone version to give it a try. Disc Drivin HD is a good download for your iPad. The game is available now in the App Store for $2.99.
